Animated Aphorism

The aim of this assignment was to express a chosen aphorism – a statement containing a general truth – in an animated sequence. I chose a quote attributed to Leonardo da Vinci: ‘It is easier to resist at the beginning than at the end’.

I personalised the aphorism a great deal by portraying myself struggling with an assignment. While this might stretch the quote slightly out of context, I think it retains its truth.

The character sequences originate from video clips at a frame rate of 15 fps. As each shot is static, I drew each background separately to the moving imagery. The drawn frames were scanned to JPEG format before being processed in Photoshop.

Each drawn frame was made by tracing a printed still onto A5 with pencil, using a makeshift lightbox (a desk lamp shone from under a glass table).
